My University in Lyon

My University in Lyon

Regular readers will know by now that Cullen Scholefield likes to have “bright young things” – we throw caution to the wind by supporting people at the beginning of their careers.

You will also know that we are passionate about supporting our local community and so whilst Maureen is often travelling to other places we support our local business association the HHDBA.

This week the two values have come together in being able to say “Bienvenue!” to Laurane Fransquin.  So now over to Laurane for her first blog in England…

I am Laurane, a 22 year old French Student born in Burgundy.  I am completing a Management Degree in Lyon.  The degree covers marketing, human resources, accounting and economics.  I currently work as an intern for Haywards Heath and District Business Association (HHDBA).

The goal of this internship is for third year students to get used to the world of work, to discover team working, to learn how a company works and especially to find their voice! Personally, what I expect from this is actually to have a clearer point of view of the world of work, to meet new people and to learn how to be efficient in my work. It’s also to learn about English work habits and to improve my level of English.

These different objectives should help me to specialise in a particular field of management next year. I plan to focus on marketing as this is a field that suits me well, combining creativeness, rigorousness, interpersonal skills and technical complexity.

This internship had to be abroad, I chose England because I thought that English work habits were different enough from French ones without being too different. I hope that I’ll be able to learn about work in another culture and also about work in general. I also like the UK, its language and its countryside a lot.

The question now is why am I in Haywards Heath whilst all my friends have an internship in London? I had a proposal for an internship in London but I preferred to come to Haywards Heath for several reasons.  The first one is that I wanted to be completely immersed in the English culture and language! But it’s also because I was seduced by what Cullen Scholefield and HHDBA does. I thought that these organisations have values close to mine.

Finally after my first couple of days, I’ve already learned several things. One Cullen Scholefield and HHDBA are true to their values. Another, perhaps more important, the HHDBA action learning meeting enables people with completely different points of view to work together to solve problems. I learned about efficiency and how to rigorously solve a problem. I already think in English so only good things should follow..!

We wish Laurane well and look forward to working with her!

Whilst we have your attention do remember that the next round of Circle of Peers events are starting soon.   The topic is The Employer Brand: How to become a Talent Magnet.  Here is the flyer.
