Two Circle of Peers events down, so now on to the Isle of Man and Gibraltar! Thinking about the next two weeks and the last two events I was struck by a couple of things hence the title of today’s blog!
It is not like me to be cynical, but I did think about how we can make it less difficult for People Professionals to invest in themselves! At the end of the sessions in London and Sussex I was good and asked for CPD reflections and guess what, the most common was I am glad I took the time out.
Perhaps the issue is that we get into habits that are hard to break. Being in the People business we are excellent at holding back – for example:
- making people redundant – keeping that professional front on to ensure that we make what is an awful situation as helpful as possible
- guiding a manager who doesn’t get the message that engaging people = role modelling engaged behaviours too!
- investigating those “interesting” situations and remaining neutral until all the facts have been gathered
My point here is perhaps all this holding back tends to make us more likely to put our own interests last!
If we are to be resilient and able to influence we must keep ourselves refreshed – just what Circle of Peers is designed to do!
That then got me thinking about change. Change is the new normal and we need to get better at coping with it ourselves in order to help others to change. So my very simple message this week is we have all got to unlearn a bit of our selfless behaviour and be selfish about our own time to develop, explore new ideas and gather strength from networking with like minded people.
So lovely contacts in Isle of Man and Gibraltar – I look forward to seeing you soon!
