Is this just me being a hopelessly positive person or is it really possible do something with ideas that seem phantasmagorical at the time?
The Back to the Future celebrations yesterday were fun with many serious organisations playing – for me this is just what life should be about. That almost child-like sense of fun and adventure. It got me on to my favourite reading area – Science Fiction / Fantasy and reflecting on fantasy has turned to fact.
For example
- Arthur C Clarke was pretty close to describing the iPad in 2001: A Space Odyssey and Virtual Reality Games in the City and the Stars.
- Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451 wrote “And in her ears the little seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in, coming in on the shore of her unsleeping mind.” Where would we be without our earbud headphones?
- Hugo Gernsback: Ralph 124c 41 + wrote about a device that combined the functions of a telephone and television – our very own Skype these days or Face Time or apps
- HG Wells: Men Like Gods written in 1923 “A message is sent to the station of the district in which the recipient is known to be, and there it waits until he chooses to tap his accumulated messages. And any that one wishes to repeat can be repeated. Then he talks back to the senders and dispatches any other messages he wishes.” Where would we be without our eMails and mobiles.
If we can only release more of our positive potential, what an amazing place the world would be.
How does this link into resilience and our ability to cope with the unknown and demanding world we live in?
